Events

LSA sponsors a number of events each year, including a potluck in December, a social in May, the notorious
Gonzo Revue in June, various craft and art sales, and other educational or entertaining programs.

Check this page often for upcoming events.

  • Tuesday, December 15, 2009: This year let's give the Library Staff Association Holiday Potluck an international flair! The Social Committee encourages you to bring a dish from your cultural tradition, an international or regional specialty you enjoy, or just surprise yourself and your co-workers by trying something new! (Don't forget to label your creation if it's a vegan or vegetarian dish).

The Potluck will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Knight Library Browsing Room, and LSA will provide coffee, tea, and punch. Friends and family are welcome; please bring a little extra food if you do bring guests. If you have any questions about the Holiday Potluck, or would like to help with the event, please email Sherra Hopkins or phone her at 6-3096.

  • Tuesday, November 17, 2009: The LSA Holiday Sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Knight Library Browsing Room. Shoppers' checks will be held until after payday on November 30. The Sale features just about anything library staff and faculty care to make and bring in to sell. Food items large or small are always welcome! There is also a rummage table. No books, please, unless they are hand-crafted blank books or your own small press printings. To help with the Sale, or for more information, please email Pam DeLaittre or phone her at 6-1826.

  • Thursday, September 10, 2009: Get your act together now for the 2009 Gonzo Revue! Eagerly awaited by many, cited in glowing terms by President Obama as "an institution which has had an important place in our democracy, and still has a vital role to play in a changing society", the Gonzo will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Knight Library Browsing Room. Attendees can anticipate refreshments along with entertainment, and as always that entertainment is provided by you, the talented UO Libraries faculty and staff. So please email Tiff Thornton (or phone her at 346-1937) to get your act scheduled. She needs a title, a list of participants, and a brief description. If you have general questions about the Gonzo, life, the universe, or anything, address your queries to Dave Baker, the general information contact for the Gonzo.

  • Monday, June 22, 2009: Last month's walk was so well-received that Ron Renchler will be leading a second Bird Walk. He writes "Our bird populations right around Knight Library are well hidden by foliage by this time of year, so I propose a noon-hour walk toward the millrace and Willamette River to look for some ground-feeding birds and larger waterfowl species. Since we'll be heading immediately in the direction of the Science Library anyway, let's designate the meeting point as near the Science Library outside entrance door at Onyx Bridge at noon. This will be easier for participants from the A&AA and Science libraries. Participants should bring binoculars if they own a pair." There is not currently a limit set on the number of participants, but please email Ron to let him know of your interest.

  • Tuesday, May 12, 2009: The LSA May Tea is a dessert potluck this year! You are encouraged to bring in a few copies of the recipe for the dessert you create to share at the Tea. LSA will provide coffee, tea, punch, and a fruit tray. Let's sweeten the gloom of the economic report and solidify our social ties and baking prowess over afternoon sugar! We'll also be honoring the Law Library's Mary Clayton, who retired last year. If you have any questions about the May Tea or would like to help with the event, please email Sherra Hopkins or phone her at 6-3096.

  • Monday, March 23, 2009: Join Ron Renchler and Sara Brownmiller on a Library Bird Walk. No birding experience is necessary. The walk will cover campus locations near the Knight Library. It will last about 45 minutes. Binoculars are not necessary to participate, but if you own a pair, please bring them. The walk will begin in the courtyard area on the west side of the Knight Library near the bike racks. The Bird Walk will be limited to the first 15 participants who preregister. Please email Ron Renchler or phone him at 6-1459.

  • Thursday, May 14, 2009: University Day activities this year will include work on the garden by the Knight Library staff entrance. Library staff are welcome to particpate in planning and creating the garden. Email Marilyn Mohr or phone her at 6-1962 for more information.

  • Tuesday, March 31, 2009: The LSA Spring Sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Knight Library Browsing Room. No books, please, unless they are hand-bound or private press books you've created.

  • Tuesday, December 16, 2008: Gray skies got you down? Holiday stress wreaking havoc with your nerves? Relax with friends and co-workers at the annual LSA Holiday Potluck! You are welcome to bring friends and family with you to the Potluck (but please bring a little extra food if you do). If you have questions or would like to help with the Holiday Potluck, please email Sherra Hopkins in Acquisitions, or phone her at 346-3096. • Tuesday, November 18, 2008: Find treasures and treats at the annual Library Staff Association Holiday Sale. Pottery, fabric arts, cards, jewelry, jams, and interesting rummage table offerings are among the many items usually available. Oddly enough, no books are on sale unless they are hand-bound or private press books printed by our co-workers. This autumn's dessert raffle will feature a creation by Heghine Hakobyan of MSDP. Since the Sale will be held earlier than usual in November, checks will also be held, until after December 1. Please email Tiffany Thornton or phone her at 346-1937 to reserve a place (and if you find you can't go, please let her know). Meet at noon at the main (north) doors of the Knight Library.
