Connecting with Goodreads
(continued)

Goodread's social networking aspect is comfortably low-key. It lacks the superficial (often inane) comment-response format that is characteristic of Facebook. In addition to comparing book reviews with people on my friends list, I have had interesting and substantive exchanges with Goodreads members in Australia and Germany related to our respective reviews of books we've both read. I've also added myself to several special interest readers' and writers' groups: Bookreaders of the Pacific Northwest, Poetry, and Writerpedia , all of which offer discussion boards and send out occasional messages, updates or invitations to cast a vote in poetry contests. There are all manner of book clubs and discussion groups, including such examples as Fantastic Fiction, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Queereaders, New Disney Haters, Book Addicts, the Next Best Book Club, People Who Won't Change the Subject from Vampires and the Aussie Readers.

Nowadays, a week rarely passes when I don't fire up Goodreads and the EPL's online catalog and place a flurry of book requests. I've discovered books that I would likely never have found on my own, as well as a long list of new authors. I also realize what a great resource it is that allows me to easily keep track of what I've read (and whether I liked it) and allows me to send specific recommendations to specific friends who have similar tastes. Now I've been longing to discover a comparable web resource for tracking films I've watched and enjoyed (or hated) but whose titles, directors and actors I can't seem to remember (and no, I don't use Netflix!). Here are several links to reviews and commentary on Goodreads and other book networking sites:
