Events of Interest

As well as featuring upcoming LSA events, we'd like to get the word out about events staff are involved in that might be of interest to co-workers. If you'd like the world to know about an upcoming event, please email Harriett Smith or Jennifer Rowan-Henry.

For February 2012

Did you know that one person in three in Lane County is eligible for food aid now?
February, the month of love, is also the month of the Governor's Food Drive.
A barrel from Food for Lane County is already in the Library Administration office, ready for your donations of healthy non-perishable food through March 2 (see their website for information about top items wanted). If you prefer to give a check rather than packaged foods, you can leave one with Sheila Gray. Checks should be made out to Food for Lane County. Receipts are available. Sheila also has bags of dark or milk Euphoria chocolates, which are being sold for $3 each as part of this fund-raiser to help support the far too many hungry people in our community. Visit her desk early to get the best choice.

Join David Landazuri and Accordions Anonymous for Polka Bowling Night on February 4, 2012 from 8 to 11 p.m. at Southtowne Lanes (2486 Willamette, in Eugene). The event is a fundraiser for the School Garden Project, and advance tickets are only $20, which includes bowling, shoes (rental), pool tables, live music by Accordions Anonymous, dancing and Accordion-Oke!!!

Tickets can be purchased at Holy Cow (2621 Willamette), Turtles Restaurant (also on Willamette), or online at Brown Paper Tickets. Tickets are limited and are NOT available at Southtowne Lanes itself, so get yours soon! While you're bowling you can also enter a raffle or contests to win wonderful prizes from south Willamette Street businesses. Contests include: Best Bowling shirt, Best (and Worst) bowlers, Best Use of Polka Dots, and Best Polka Dancing. Dine at Holy Cow the evening of the event, and a percent of the sale will be donated to the School Garden Project. Questions? Email Karen at bkwildish@yahoo.com

Harriett Smith is back in the Eugene Concert Choir and highly recommends their upcoming concert of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 8 p.m. at the Hult's Silva Concert Hall. Britten interspersed the words of the Latin mass with poetry by World War I soldier and poet Wilfred Owen. Strong soloists, moving text and music, and performers from the Eugene Symphony, Oregon Festival Choirs, Eugene Concert Choir, and Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble make this a concert you won't want to miss, the last in the Symphony's "Counterpoint" series on war and peace. Contact the Hult Center for tickets, and if you are a veteran or active military be sure to mention it: tickets for you are only $15.
